The darkling beetle tribe Edrotini is a speciose, morphologically diverse lineage distributed throughout the Americas. However, the last comprehensive revision of the tribe was conducted over one hundred years ago and the last comprehensive edrotine revision, of primarily North American taxa, included many new genera and species based on dubious characters. This has led to significant taxonomic confusion and hampered descriptive and applied research. Further, recent analyses of molecular data call into question the monophyly of the tribe. To explore character evolution and test both tribal and generic monophyly, we analysed morphological and molecular data, from targeted enrichment sequencing, representing a majority of Edrotini genera and putative sister taxa. Based on these results we propose redefined tribal and generic concepts to resolve taxonomic uncertainty and enable future work in the tribe.
