The US has a long history of attracting entomologists worldwide with opportunities ranging from the pursuit of undergraduate and graduate degrees, and postdoctoral research, to employment in diverse agencies. We arrive as foreigners with great excitement, eager to learn and embrace our new surroundings, and integrate US culture with our own. We have the capacity to succeed, we work diligently, we persevere, we rise from disappointments with renewed energy; yet we often feel that we are not achieving our full potential. But, many have achieved amazing success over the years, and we can learn from their experiences. This presentation will explore factors that ‘hold’ foreign entomologists ‘back’ in their careers in the US, and provide insights on how we can build on, and integrate, our cultural differences into our professional lives, and succeed!
