Covid 19 has caused unprecedented changes and challenges to teaching University classes. While lectures have been accommodated through technology including Zoom, voice-over PowerPoint, and other technologies, teaching virtual laboratories and assessing student learning outcomes has proven more challenging. For example, teaching students how to collect, curate, and identify insect specimens without access to scopes and instructor presence and determining if students have gained sight identification skills can be daunting. Beyond these challenges, all materials must also meet ADA compliance. Beginning in 2002, I taught an online Insect Biology and Classification course delivered to a national and international audience. I will present tips and insights gathered from teaching online that are now relevant to teaching alternatively.
