Dragonfly and damselfly fauna (Insecta: Odonata) as assessment tool for ecological integrity of aquatic ecosystems in Lagos, Nigeria

Lagos, Nigeria is endowed with aquatic ecosystems that play significant socio-cultural and economic roles. However, there is paucity of information on integrity of the water bodies spread across the city in relation to Odonata. This study was conducted using odonates as bioindicators and physico-chemical factors as determinant of the water quality in three selected water bodies; The Mangrove Swamp in Lekki Nature Reserve, Canal in Victoria Garden City, Ajah and the ‘Lagoon front’ area at the University of Lagos. The health status of the aquatic systems was assessed using an integrated approach based on the three parameters (biological, chemical and physical characteristics of the aquatic ecosystems). Adult odonates were collected bi-weekly for 7 months (April to October, 2015), while water samples were collected in April and September from the three sampling sites.  A total of 977 individuals belonging to 34 species in 22 genera and three families (Libellulidae, Coenagrionidae and Platycnemididae) were collected. Libellulidae had the highest percentage composition (81%), with Acisoma inflatum having the highest number of individuals (230). This was followed by Coenagrionidae (17%) with 7 species, and Platycnemididae with the lowest percentage composition (2%) having only 2 species, Platycnemis rufipe and Allocnemis nigripes.  The Canal had the highest species diversity (Hꞌ= 3.004) while swamp had the least (Hꞌ = 1.923).  Physico-chemical and Margalef’s water quality index showed that the canal has the best water quality when compared to the other two sites, and this accounted for the high species abundance and diversity found in the site.
