Forensic Entomology is a branch of forensic science that deals with various arthropods and how they relate to a crime, almost always a death. These fields further distinguish themselves into three categories: store product, urban, and medicolegal. This field of study is over a thousand years old, but gained popularity during the late 19th Century. Forensic entomologists can not only determine time, mode, and location of death, but also the consciousness and intoxication of a live victim. Although it is not widely seen, forensic entomology has been used to solve a number of criminal investigations and bring justice to those involved. By citing various cases solved by the use of forensic entomology, I will be able to highlight the history of the field and why it’s application is so crucial to the modern day justice system.
