Because ants have been rearing themselves in human structures for thousands of years, the transition from wild to laboratory colony can be easy but the maintenance of healthy colonies in the laboratory does required dedicated work and attention to details that are specific for each of the species being reared. Containment is one of the greatest problems in ant rearing, along with the need for expansion of living space as the colony grows.
