Adopting interpretation and engagement techniques can help entomologists be more persuasive and reach new audiences. Facts are nice, but emotions are more important in communicating with non-entomological audiences and encouraging evidence-based decision making. The data about who gets "scienced at" in outreach programs is not great. Folks that are most likely to participate in science events or visit zoos and museums are.... people already interested in science. Our programs often don't reach low-income communities, or people with BIPOC identities. Instead of waiting for people to come to us in our science spaces (museums, extension websites, etc.), we need to go where people already are. It is not "outreach" if you are already part of the community. Core attributes of public engagement with science include considering the needs of the target audience and a mutual learning experience.
