A Bombus affinis story: What can we learn from a bumble bee nest?

Three rusty-patched bumble bee (Bombus affinis Cresson) nests were reported in Minnesota and Wisconsin in 2020. Finding B. affinis nests is an extremely rare event, thus three in one season is noteworthy. This infograph showcases the variety of genetic, microbial, and behavioral data that was collected from these nests. The rusty-patched bumble bee is a federally endangered species and successful conservation depends on filling key knowledge gaps. To help answer questions on B. affinis nesting biology, behavior, diet, pathogens, genetics and the Bombus community, we observed nest and mating activity, surveyed the surrounding bumble bee community, collected genetic material via whole specimen collection, tarsal clips, and genetic swabs, and examined pathogens via fecal samples and dead bees. Data collection and analysis required a network of coordinated partners, including university scientists and state and federal agencies. Collaborative partnerships across institutions and agencies can improve our knowledge of endangered species and lead to better informed conservation actions.
