Status and enhancement of Trissolcus japonicus (Ashmead), for biological control of brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Stål) in Utah

Trissolcus japonicus (Ashmead) is an exotic egg parasitoid of the brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys (Stål). In North America, H. halys is an invasive pest of agricultural crops, ornamentals, and human-occupied structures. T. japonicus was first discovered attacking H. halys eggs in northern Utah the summer of 2019 (Salt Lake Co.) and re-detected in expanded locations in 2020 (Salt Lake and Utah cos.) through yellow sticky card and sentinel egg mass surveys. In summer 2020 surveys, T. japonicus emerged from 47% of parasitized H. halys egg masses (32% native parasitoids, 21% unknown). Four Trissolcus species were identified from sticky card surveys (65% T. euschisti, 16% T. utahensis, 6% T. strabus, 5% T. japonicus, and 8% unidentified). Eleven T. japonicus adults were observed in Catalpa speciosa Warder ex Engelm canopies not associated with stink bug egg masses in 2020, likely searching for host eggs. To support establishment and enhancement of adventive T. japonicus populations, cover crop floral resources appropriate to the Intermountain West region will be assessed in Y-tube olfactometer experiments using Fagopyrum esculentum (Moench), Lobularia maritima (L.) Desv., Lotus corniculatus (L.), Medicago sativa (L.), Trifolium pratense (L.), and Vicia villosa (Roth). Experimental method development is underway. Our goal is to identify promising cover crop species to conserve and enhance the efficacy of T. japonicus for suppression of H. halys in North America.
